Question:

Do car alarms really work?

Nearly had the car stolen last week. The police said the guys must have been scared away because judging by the damage they were moments away from taking it. The police said electronic alarms don‘t work, no matter what. Best to get some sort of mechanical deterrent. Any comments welcome on what I can to do secure my car. All the advertising recommends the best electronic gadgets around. Am dubious as they cost a lot and the police said they don‘t work.

Answer:

Just make sure your car has an immobiliser, that'll stop them from jump starting it. Alarms usually aren't all that good since most people have gotten into the habit of just ignoring them (so if someone tries to steal your car and the alarm goes off everyone who hears it is just going to think it's another screwed up car alarm).
Have you ever been in a parking lot and heard someones car alarm going off? Did you run over there to investigate? Did the police show up in a matter of minutes? Did anyone notify 911? They do not work because they are mostly ignored by people who hear them going off. They are useful in getting lower insurance rates and might scare off an amateur but a pro will just steal your noisemaking car and drive off. The best security devices are the ones that locate your car once it is stolen or on-star who always know where your car is but they are installed somehow and can be removed just as well by someone who knows how. Keep the doors locked and park it in a secure garage.
