Salts of copper(I) (cuprous) and copper(II) (cupric) rarely look alike, either as a solid or in solution. Nearly all cupric salts give a blue color, at least in their hydrated state (a beautiful shade, by the way, even more beautiful when dissolved). Cuprous salts are darkish and nondescript. Copper(I) sulfide (called chalcocite) is dark grey/black; Copper(II) sulfide (called covellite) is indigo blue (tarnished to purple or black); Copper(I) sulfate is a grey powder; and Copper(II) sulfate anhydrous form is a pale green or gray-white powder, but in the pentahydrate state is a gorgeous blue color.
