rick, think the op is refering to a different kind of fuel cell. as in a fuel holding tank. like, a gas tank. as opposed to stock gas tanks, of course. ------------ Do fuel cells increase performance? not really. depending on the type, maybe safer than an existing fuel tank. but maybe a requirement for some fuel delivery systems or chassis/running gear upgrades. back in the day it was needed on some rear wheel drive set ups. especially those that employed narrow rear ends. no room for a tank under there. plus, some classes of racing require fuel cells.
A fuel cell 'burns' fuel produces electricity without the pollutants involved with a gas engine. Are you asking if the power output per pound weight of a fuel cell is better then the power output of a gas engine per pound weight ? Currently, no. The fuel cell is more efficient, if you look at the pollutants, but currently way to expensive to mass produce.
