Question:

Do gas additives help clean a car's engine and get better gas mileage?

Do products like STP work?

Answer:

if you are using a top quality gasoline like shell, it already has those additives in it. if you are not using a good quality gas (generic brands) they won't have as many or as good of additives and a periodic additive can help. yes, you can clean the injectors to a degree with an additive. i don't live close to a shell station (i get easily my best gas mileage on shell gas) so i periodically add a cleaner and it will affect the fuel economy. as for 'dry gas', there was a reason for that, but it's gone now, so it's a waste of time. the reason was that gas can get water in it and the dry gas bonds with it allowing it to be burned and keeping it from freezing in the winter. but all that was is alcohol, now that ethanol is in all gasoline, it's unnecessary.
I don't know where Mawell or Tortuga are coming from but they are way off base. There have been quite a few studies but multiple car manufacturers on this exact point. The cleaners do just that keep the injectors clean maintaining your fuel economy. The octane increasers do just that increase the octane level of the fuel your burning. This increase increases the internal Explosion inside of your cylinder. This in turn decreases the amount of fuel you use to keep the same force as the lower octane fuel. But be careful to high in octane can burn the tops of your pistons, unless the motor is built for this use or abuse. Most of the store octane increasers only raise the level by a few points. If your looking on increases in mileage and performance work on more air flow first. Then play with the fuel.
No, no, no. I'm not sure how old you are, but remember the dry gas phase? When we were all supposed to put dry gas additive in our cars in the winter to help the fuel get to the engine. It's all rubbish. Fuel injectors cannot be cleaned by additives, nor do you get better mileage. Changing your air filter for $2.99 will give you better mileage.
