check what's more in demand in your area maybe elctrician or carpentry.electrician is the best but you have to find out when you can retire.I belong to the carpet union I can retire in 25 years if you are 18 it means you can retire at age 43.in electrical maybe you can retire in 35 years you have to do research.the only drawback in unions is that you only get paid if there is work if it is slow you might have to retire later.why don't you just go to college and take a course which is in demand there.good luck
