Question:

Do I need some sort of car checkup at 70k miles?

It‘s a 2005 mini copper s and I got it new. I drive a lot and its at 70k miles. Its paid off and I want it to last at least a few more years but I‘m worried major problems are going to start popping up. Recently the alternator went out because there were some electrical system problems and it was costly and time consuming. Barring that though it rarely has problems and has been reliable. I‘m wondering if there‘s a matinence checkup or something I should do to ensure nothing else is wearing out? If so, should I go to bmw (the dealership) to have it done so they have the right equipment and catch everything? I get oil changed etc but I‘ve never had a tune up or anything. How much will it cost? Just trying to give my car a long reliable life! ThanksAlso is there anything specific I should ask about if I take it in? It‘s a manual also if that helps but I had to replace the transmission 2 yrs after I bought it.

Answer:

Regular maintenance schedule can usually be found in your owner's manual, this is helpful for preventative maintenance but won't prevent random events like the alternator failure you experienced. At 70K miles you should have your brakes checked for wear, they are probably due for replacement. Also your front struts may be ready for replacement as well as your rear shocks/struts. These are normal wear items that start to significantly deteriorate at about this mileage. Fuel filters and cabin filters may need to be replaced and your AC system may need a recharge and lubricant addition. Other than that I would not expect to have any major problems for another few years if you take care of these now. Exhaust system problems may show up at about 100K miles and your 02 sensors probably will need to be checked then too.
