Question:

do i really need to replace my water pump?

on my 92' toyota celica, i got the heater core by pass fixed and also a new radiator because both were leaking, and now my mechanic tells me i also need a new water pump , which can be really expensive! apparently it is leaking water too, so i was thinkng just filling up my car with water before driving until i can afford to get it fixed.. can this shortcut be done to prevent my water pump causing me further problems?

Answer:

in most cases when the water pump starts to leak water then its going out. there is no way to know how long it will last but you dont want to drive it long this way. water pump prices are not usually that bad the last one i bought (chevy s-10) was less than $40. not sure what the price for your car will be but if you can do it yourself then it will save you a lot of money.
Ohhh I used to do that. My radiator hose had a hole in it and it would leak. I'd refill my anti freeze once a week. One day 10 minutes before I got out of work I started my car to warm it up. When I get out of work I come to see that anti freeze is all over the ground and my engines smoking big time. I refilled it and drove a quarter mile to the mechanic and it all spilled out on my way their too lol. My hose ruptured is what happened(hole got bigger). I say don't press your luck and go replace it.
Seems the pump was the issue since the get go, u do understand a water PUMP pumps water, n if it dont work, it cant PUMP water to cool ur engine. If its a car u drive often gt it replaced asap
not a good idea. depending on the rate the fluids are leaking from the pump, you could need a lot of water just to get down the street. more importantly, straight water is not good for your car, antifreeze is also a coolant and protectant for the engine.your engine gets too hot, good chance your going to blow a head gasket. think a water pump is expensive, nothing compared to fixing a head gasket - imagine having to do both. just replace the pump.
You can do that, but you can't fill it with pure water because in time you'll have only water in the system which can cause problems. Antifreeze also increases boiling point of the water/antifreeze mixture thus protecting the engine... You should always add 50/50 mixture. Anyway, bad pump is generally bad for cooling. It is better to have leaking radiators than bad pump.
