Question:

Do vinegar and copper make a poison?

I heard that if you store vinegar in a copper container for a few weeks it becomes a poison, is this true????? (if so thats kinda scary)

Answer:

It sound plausible as the vinegar will promote the oxidizing of the copper so the copper turn a blue-greenish colour on the surface, and that surface layer is toxic. In orchard's`s, growers often use copper based compounds to spray primarily as fungicides.
Vinegar is acetic acid. Acetic acid + copper will give a solution of copper acetate. Copper acetate is extremely poisonous to fish and aquatic species. Though it's less toxic to humans (it's unlikely that you would consume enough vinegar from a copper container to kill you) it's perfectly possible that it could make you ill. Acidic solutions tend to make metals mobile (i.e. put them into solution). If you have copper water pipes in your home, they're safe because water tends to be neutral or alkaline. Try not to store any consumables in a copper container, many foods are acidic too.
