I bought my last bunch of DPs on eBayI got a dozen sets (5 pieces per set) of brand new bamboo needles for under $20.- including shippingThey have the smaller sizes of circular needles, too, in this same type of dealGo to the crafts section and work your way to knitting needles, then type in bamboo circular 16 and you'll find a good dealThey come from various places, and come in plastic bags instead of fancy cases, but they are good needlesI have the full complement of DPs and a dozen pair of 14 regular needles in different sizes that I got this way.
They probably have some beginner books thereBut I wouldn't start with a large (thick) needle, I think they would be harder to handleI myself learned with about 3.5 mm (US 4), and wool yarnIt will call for the size needle on the paper band around the yarnGood luck!
Assuming that you will be starting with something really simple like a garter stitch scarf (which is what I'd recommend) you will need one pair of straight single point needles, your yarn, a pair of scissors or a yarn cutter, and a darning needle to finish the endsFor more complicated projects in the future, you will probably want a stitch holder or two, and some stitch markersEventually you will want a variety of sizes and styles of knitting needles, but I recommend buying them as you need themI've had really bad luck with all of the interchangable needle sets, so I don't recommend themI also prefer to use circular needles most of the time, but that is because they put less strain on my sore wrists.

To learn to knit, you just need a book that tells you how to do it, a skein of yarn, I like knitting worsted weight and size 10 needlesYou will wear out this first skein of yarn, knitting it and unknitting or rippit and winding back into a ballSo don't get an eyelash or fuzzy yarn, just everyday Red Heart or something very plainYou will eventually need yarn needles and scissors, but not really a necessity right nowYou will also eventually want markers, stitch holders and numerous other little doo dadsI would start with about casting on 25 stitches and knitting these for Garter stitch for about a skeins worth of length and have a scarfThen you can do one in Stockinette stitch knit one row and purl one row for the same skeins worth of lengthThen you will be ready for a huge project of some sort!! Enjoy your new preoccupation!!! It isn't just a hobby!! And it is much easier to take with fewer side effects than say Prozac for its calming effects!!!
