It is pronounced as pyg iron but spelt pig iron. Pig iron is the first impure product of smelting iron ore with coke and limestone in a blast furnace. Pig iron has a very high carbon content, typically which makes it very brittle and not useful directly as a material except for limited applications. Hence pig iron is normally treated to purify it and convert it to steel. The iron from the blast furnace used to be cast into moulds and the lumps of crude iron produced where known as 'pigs' hence the name There is an excellent animation of the process at www.bbc .uk/history/british/vic.
