Question:

Does using a programmable thermostat to control a water boiling system cause excessive wear on boiler system?

I am wanting to program our programmable thermostat to 6 degree swings (daytime versus nighttime). My question is, will this cause excessive wear and tear on our boiler system? Thank You!

Answer:

it wont cause anymore wear and tear on it than using a regular thermostat. when you come home and it has to heat up that 6 degrees that you want it to, its actually good for the boiler. think of a boiler like a car, if you drive them on the interstate they last longer than if you drive them in town. My point being that the longer you run a boiler the better as opposed to short cycling it by making it kick on and off. thats why when you size a boiler or a furnace you should lean toward the smaller size that you think will work because you want it to come on and run for a while rather than start up run for 30 seconds and kick off.
