My professor said that a duplex outlet has a capacity of 220 watts, making each slot 110 watts each(?), so does that mean that a single outlet only has 110 capacity? Or am have I mixed it up??
I should hope that would be the case. That is only 2 amps on an residential outlet that can handle 15 amps or 1650 watts or commercial outlet that handle 20 amps or 2200 watts. I think you have your terms confused.
That means total power comes out from outlets are 220 watts max. More than that, fuse shall blow. You may get 220W out from any one outlet. Or 219W from one outlet and 1W keeps for other. You were mixed up because you did not study well enough how a double outlet was made. Inside the outlet ,it has a copper bar to join both outlets. Why not break open one outlet with hummer to see how it was made ? I remember I did that when I was a kid.
