Question:

Electrical wiring question regarding light switches.?

I am installing a high-hat. I had hoped to run it to another light switch at the top of my stairs. That light switch is currently connected to another light in the ceiling of my den. The problem I have is that the den light is also controlled by a swiutch at the bottom of the stairs. PROBLEM : When I ran my HIGHHAT wiring ot the top switch the box only had 3 wires (a red, white and black). I wasn't expecting this. If I wanted to use the poswer in this box, and add another switch, what should I do? The Black and White were on one side of the old lightswitch and the Red was on the left. How would YOU do this? Can it be done without adding another live wire into the box?Basically, I need ot know how to add another light/switch using hte red black and white.

Answer:

You cannot do this without some re-wiring. From the description, you are trying to go to a 3-way switch. It sounds like it was wired as a dead end. There is no neutral wire at this switch. Therefore, it is not possible to wire your light directly into this switch box. You may be able to run new wiring that would make this possible. However, we would need a lot more info about your existing wiring to advise.
