Why is the configuration of copper - 1s? 2s? 2p^6 3s? 3p^6 3d^10 4s^1and not1s? 2s? 2p^6 3s? 3p^6 3d^9 4s?because the 4s subshell fills before the 3d subshell in every other electronic configuration? thanksss!

Electron Configuration Of Copper
Copper is an exception because a filled 3d subshell is more stable than having 3d9. Electron configurations seek stability. It's also more stable to have a 1/2 filled subshell rather than a full 4s (which is why Cr goes 1s? 2s? 2p^6 3s? 3p^6 3d^5 4s1) It's like taking an advance to pay off some rent. The 4s shell get's its electron back on the very next element Zn, but because it is better for the Cu to also have a full 3d shell it borrows one from the 4s shell.
