My best friend is having a first birthday party for her little one. I would just get a toy but I would like it to be more meaningful than that since I am so close to them. Any ideas?
Books. It's never too early to instil a love of reading. Try colorful board books by Karen Katz, Eric Carle or Sandra Boynton. They are available online or in the children's section of the local bricks and mortar bookstore.

savings bond. you can put a smal toy or outfit with it if you want something for the kid toactually open (although they dont do too much opening at that age.) I bet they'd really appreciate your investment in the childs future.
We're making a slide show of pictures of my sons first year starting with maternity pics to put on a dvd.or you could always do a photo collage from his first year ;)
