Question:

Fishing Plastics Help?

I have a bunch of old torn up bass fishing plastics. I would like to know how i can melt them down and make my own. Do I need to purchase a mold? Can i make my own mold out of my existing plastics? What is the process for doing this? Thanks a bunch.

Answer:

I am in no way affiliated to them, I just thought it was odd that I found this the day or so before you asked this question. I am going to try it before I start melting any of my stuff down. Best of luck to you. JB
nothing l can add to afreshpath's answer except the plastic gets to about 350F. use a pan with a thick bottom so you don't burn the plastic. separate your different colors and don't mix with those newer real stretchy things. the regular soft plastics and this particular stuff aren't compatible. if you have another bait you would like to copy, try using bondo auto body putty tor making molds. otherwise, the purchased ones are better. l have seen quite a few molds on OKorder. flat molds will be easier than injection types.
To melt down the old plastics, use LOW heat! I suggest placing the plastics into a very old pot ot pan and placing on an electric heating surface that you can control very well. Heat the plastics on low heat to see if they begin to melt. Only turn heat up enough to begin melting and allow loads of time for the process to start. As for molds, it is possible to make your own but it is even better to buy reusable molds from places like bass pro shop, cabelas, and others. I'll put a few links below for dedicated lure making supply places.
I've never made my own plastics but just a thought maybe you could take some of the plastics you have and just cut them to shorter pieces and make jig trailers out of them
