Question:

Fuel additives- waste of money? And tune-up?

I‘ve got an older car. A ‘95 Saturn with 141,000 miles. I‘ve just noticed lately that it hasn‘t been getting as good of mileage. First, those fuel additives you see in the store(like GumOut), are they worth adding to your gas tank? I know they claim to be an injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner. Are they a waste of money/screw up my car? Or worth it?Second, how often should you get a tune-up? I get my oil changed regularly but what about a full tune-up and what exactly should they be doing with a tune-up? I think my last one was 3 years ago.

Answer:

if you reprogram the computer and put on a high flow exhaust it works, other than that save your money.
it all helps a little, but matching ports to exhaust and enlarging is more effective and free
Probably need a Tune Up. Check your Air Filter yourself, if it is dirty/clogged etc then low power and bad fuel mileage. Fuel Addititives can help but can NOT fix a larger problem. Yes people swear by Seafoam, Lucas T
In My opinion most of those additives are junk. Seafoam is some good stuff. It kind of hard to find in my area. NAPA has it. As far as a tune upIt depends on the garage you take it to. You don't adjust the valves on that engine. So Maybe they just change your spark plugs and plug wires. That particular engine has been known to burn a little oil. Not that big of a deal go pull out the dipstick and make sure it is not low. You can google how do I check my oilfor my info. Be careful too much oil is not good. You want the level to be just right Your dipstick should have markers on it. I bet your oil level is a little lowThat will effect your milage. so will tire pressure make sure your tires are all at the correct PSI There is usually a sticker on the inside of the door(when you open the door) with that info.if not.look in your manual.
Don't use fuel additives. They're all snake oil. The only real fuel injector cleaner is so strong that you cannot add it to your fuel tank. When using these real cleaner you need to remove the fuel return line. There is no such thing as a tune-up nowadays. You go by the manufacturer's recommended services.
