I need something in my spare bedroom for my mother-in-law to sleep on when she comes to visit (about 2x per year, 2 weeks at a time). I currently have a full-size bed but I want to convert that room into an exercise room (treadmill and small area for yoga, pilates, etc.). The bed takes up far too much room to do all of these things. When she isn't visiting, the door to that room stays closed and we never use it since the bed takes up almost the entire room (the house is old and the room is itty bitty tiny!). I want to get rid of the bed and replace it with either a sleeper sofa or futon (something a little upscale...not college-dorm style). What are your thoughts? What would YOU recommend I get? Please help!
Ugh - never found a futon that was comfortable. Are there sleeper sofas smaller than a 'full' or 'queen' size? I doubt it. (The smaller size would be a 'twin'.) You could buy a frame and mattress for a twin bed and disassemble it when not on use, then prop mattress against the wall with a protective cover over it. Or, research Intex inflatable beds. These 'air mattresses' are 2-3 times the thickness of a regular air mattress so they stand up off the floor and are very comfortable. You could also get a twin frame and lay a sheet of plywood in the frame to raise it up even more and look like a real bed. It would disassemble and take less space than the first suggestion!
A sleeper sofa futons look like a college dorm plus it sounds werid letting your mother in law sleep on a futon
I find an inflatable mattress is quite comfortable, but buy a good one!
