Question:

Heart Valves?

For those of you that have had a heart valve replaced, why did your heart valve go bad?

Answer:

My dad had his replaced because he had rheumatic fever as a child. Many people have them replaced due to congenital defects of the heart. If you are asking why the replacement valve went bad, my dad still has his the original replacement. He did say that the valves made from pig, cow, or cadaver only last 5, 10, 15 years.
A good friend of mine ignored his bad cold symptoms and was diagnosed with pneumonia when it already affected his heart valves.
They usually just get worn or go bad my son will be getting his Pulmonary Valve put in here within the next year. he has a CHD and with his last open-heart surgery they had to remove it, so right now he doesn't have one. the cardiologist tell me they can last up to 20 years!!!
It depends on the type of the vavle. They usually get worn after 10-15 years.
