HELP!! Is this Ok to do??!??

Is it ok to wash dry clean only materials??? Like maybe once once every 6 months or so. We have tried to dry clean our stuff, but it hasn‘t worked. We have a really nice comforter (king size) as well as matching throw pillows and pillow cases. They are mostly velvety. and the tags say to dry clean only. 2 pillow cases are100% polyester2 are66%rayon, and 34% polyester on the front and 60% cotton and 40% polyester on the backthe comforter is the exact same as the last 2 pillows and is stuffed with 100% polyester The throw pillows covers are 55% viscose and 45% polyester on the front and 100% cotton on the backThe pillow on the inside is 100% polyester.I didn‘t know if anyone would need to know the materials to make an educated guess, so I put them here anyways I have tried a damp cloth to no avail What they really need is a good washing but we don‘t own any other dry clean stuff so I am not sure what to do Please help!!!!

Answer:

I hardly ever take things to be dry cleaned. Washing is usually not what damages things, its usually the dryer. So I'd wash in delicate cycle and then line or air dry.
I would think the reason for the dry clean only is so the comforter, pillows, etc do not lose their shape or color in the wash. The polyester fill tends to pull apart sometimes it will look all lumpy after that. Or because the different fabrics would shrink and fade at different rates. Have you tried those over- the- counter dryclean at home things? I think it's Dryel or something? I've never tried them myself, but I've heard good things about them. IF you still decide to wash it, I personally wouldn't dry it. I would hang it out to dry. Just to be sure one material wouldn't shrink. (Like the rayon or cotton)
Sorry, but I wouldn't wash anything with any kind of filler in it. I have tried washing dog toys in cold water and delicate cycle and they always come out lumpy. The other thing I would be afraid of is mold. The filler in the pillows will never dry enough and you could create mold inside of it. It would be the same with the other items. I have washed curtains on cold wash, rinse and gentle cycle. They have turned out like new. You can purchase very nice bedding that is washable. I have some beautiful quilts that are washable. I would never buy anything for a bed that cannot be washed.
