Question:

Help my cast iron is covered in rust?

Ok, let me give you a little back storyMy girlfriend and i bought a cast iron pan from the store the other day (Emril's brand if that makes a differnce)It said it was pre-seasoned tooSo i figured i didn't have to season it, for the 1st use. Now, i knew when buying the pan how to take care of itMy gf washed it, the other day, and when some of the dried bits didn't come off she sprinkled salt over it, and let it sit.I got home to realize that what she had done to be wrongI got the salt out of the pan, but the damage was doneAnd now it seems my pan has rusted along the whole bottom in the spots where the salt had sat.Now my questionHow do i get this off? I've been scraping with brushes and all kinds of stuff to get the rust offIts not like bits of rust, but more like it stained the pan.Is this harmful to cook with it on there? Would my food come out tasting weird? Can i get that off by seasoning it?

Answer:

First off, if the pan was just purchased you should not have had the problem with the stickingI would try to return the panIf you can't return it then you will have to season it againWash wellDry the panApply oil the the inside and the outside of the panPre heat the oven to 400 Put the pan in the oven and bake it for an hour or soI invert the pan directly on the oven rack, put a piece of aluminum foil under it to catch any drips of oilLet it cool in the ovenYou should be good to goSeason as neededBut it shouldn't have to be done often.
Ok to all of you who are smearing the vet for suggesting a high fiber diet need to relaxVets often prescribe fiber to animals who need to bulk up their stool, have anal gland issues, weight loss or GI tract issuesMost cats like the canned pumpkin so it is surprising that your cat does notI would heat it up for a few seconds to make it extra smelly and see if she gets interested in itAdding metamucil to the cats diet is an optionI would phone the vet and ask how much to administer each dayCats that have issues defacating can benefit from omega fatty acidsYou would want to get either 3V caps or derm caps.
If the vet recommended it for a bowel problem you could mix it with wet foodYou could try a little salt and real butter not oleo on the pumpkinIf you want her to have softer stools try a tablespoon of kitten chow twice a dayIf you give her to much it will give her diarrheaShe will like the kitten chow so you can make it treat time.
