Question:

Help with Smoke Detector - upside down?

live in an old house with 12 foot ceilings. I don't have a ladder to reach the ceiling, so I've placed the smoke detectors on top of the transom sill over each bedroom door. Basically they are sitting on a shelf upside down (with the detector part facing up). I'm worried that they may not work with that orientation, and I'm also worried about them being 4-5 feet from the ceiling. would 4-5 feet of smoke build up against the ceiling before the detectors ever went off?

Answer:

if you keep the doll out of the sunlight they will not yellow, they must not have used the non-yellowing varnish, or finish. Could you found out early. Also write the factory and ask for a replacement.
Let me get this right.. You want to carry out an experiment that demonstrates some physical result on an object the nearest of which is thousands of light years away? And you want it to be cheap?
They're all going going to yellow some day, regardless of sun exposure. Sun exposure makes it worse, and quicker. Paler resins show yellowing earlier, and some companies use resins that yellow faster than others. I had a Domuya doll that sat unassembled in a box the first year I had her, and had yellowed a surprising amount in that time. For regular resin, there's no way to repair it. A lot of people give them a good scrub down with a mild abrasive. Basically a light sanding.
