Question:

how can i get rid of an old heavy cast iron boiler? very very heavy - trying to do it on the cheap.?

its located in the basement and is a bout 4.5 feet high and relatively wide and is too heavy to even hand-truck it up the stairs. I am looking for options - thanks

Answer:

Good luck breaking it with a sledgehammer. Personally, I would put up a sign in the grocery store or a cheap little ad in the paper or a free one on Craigs list, and give it to anyone who wants to haul it away for free. They can sell it for scrap. Also, try calling a few scrap metal companies or similar. They might come pick it up.
boilers are always made up from several sections that fit together and they have several long bolts that hold the sections together.Take the tin jacket off cut the bolts or unscrew them get a chisel and drive it in between sections. They usually come apart easily. The sections will now be manageable.Scrap prices are up you should be able to find someone to haul it to a scrap yard if you don't have a truck.
Cast iron will break if you hit it with a sledge hammer, take an old blanket and put over it to keep sharp pieces from flying and hitting something or someone and go to town on it. Take the scape back and get some beer money.
