Question:

How can I help my high school be more green?

My high school teachers have boxes that they can put paper in, and we recycle it for them, and that's itI was thinking about starting a program to help make our school more environment friendly, but I need some ideasI was thinking about installing trash cans for plastic and for aluminum.

Answer:

Everybody thinks that putting bins out to collect recyclables is promoting recycling but it's not The recycling companies charge a fee to pick up the recyclables That fee is usually on your monthly water bill The business model is to make money from the fees, if they happen to find a buyer for the sorted recyclables then great but otherwise it goes straight into the landfill All this misguided interest in recycling has glutted the recyclables market and resulted in neat sorted piles in the landfill If you really wanted to support recycling, you would purchase products made from recycled products Have the school review their supplies from paper, books, paper towels and toilet paper and see what can be replaced with recycled productsPut out promotional material advertising products made from recyclables, perhaps some displaysIf you put out trash cans to collect the plastic and aluminum, the aluminum will get sold to a scrap metal dealer but chances are that the plastic will go straight to the landfill Either way, the school would wind up paying an additional fee for the recyclables to be picked up.
