how can I identify an old piece of iron found by a river?

Answer:

The cost of installing dual disc and rear disc brakes is prohibitive, you will need to change both wheels and forks.
if it iron ore it will be black or rusted color and be heavier than most other rocks around it and if its a peice of iron put a magnet to it to test it
depends what type of iron are you talking about steel or some naturally occuring iron ore
Fabricate another disc bracket for the front, weld on fixing brackets for front, (aluminium welding?). Get another disc/pads. Change the master for a dual system. Get new hoses. The rear is much different. You need to try out various wheels that have a disc set-up. Get the rear master/hoses, and fab a bracket to fix them to. All relatively simple if you have my knowledge.and tools! You also need to make sure there's clearance for another disc up front. Failing that, get a more modern front end and fit it.which is easier!
