I have to light the candle before my mom comes home and she smells the dog poop. Yeh but he's a puppy so its ok for now but she always has bad days at work and is stressed out all the time, so how can I light it without getting burnt.

Hold the lighter upright, then take the candle and tilting it so wick can be lit by the flame of lighter. Be careful.
first of all, I am assuming you have cleaned up the mess, gotten it out of the house and into the trash because that would clear up the air best of all. Then check to see if you have some baking soda; it deoderizes pet smells as well as other things. Put over the spot where the puppy has gone to the bathroom, urine or other. This should clean the air completely. I would not even bother with the candle. Check in the cupboards: if she has some vanilla put a little liquid vanilla on the sink to cover the stink. Good luck!
If you are using a regular bic/flick lighter just pick up the candle and hold it upside down until the wick is lit. Here's a better option though. Try using an electric tart or cadle warmer or a wax melter. These electric devices will melt the scented wax and make your home smell great 24hrs a day. They're safe and effective. Light the Lighter and tip the Candle towards it, instead of tipping the lighter to the Candle.!
