Question:

How Can You Tell Austenitic Stainless Steel Cookware?

I have some copper bottom pans that are non-magnetic and want to know if they are aluminum or austenitic stainless steel (the only steel that is non-magnetic)Is there an easy way to tell?

Answer:

It all depends on where you intend to go and what time of the yearThe basics needed are: a canvas tent with a poly tarp for the inside floorA decent hammer to drive the tent pegs into the groundAn axe that must be sharpA strong and sharp bowie knifeNot a folding knifeThese are very dangerous in the bush (woods) for a first time campA minimum of 50 yds of 1/2 rope or rope rated at around 1000lb strengthThis must not ever be cut or shortenedA shovel A coil of thin cord about 1/8 thickWaterproof matches and a flint stick A 12 Camp Oven also called a Dutch Oven and Heat-beads or a twin burner gas stove and lightSleeping bags of the required rating for the cold and camp mattress Heavy duty rain coats Two sets of dry clothes for a complete changeAlways keep your feet warm and dry and wear a beanie to keep your head warmA compass and a GPS if possible plus topographical maps or where you are goingA First Aid Kit Flashlights and new batteries For food: Self raising flour, 4lb packButter or margarine dried full cream milk Coffee and tea Chocolate bars Sugar Salt Pepper Cake mix in packet Sultanas Cheese Eggs Rice Soup in packets Baked beans Carrots Favorite greens Clean fresh water in 4 gal container, not in bottlesUtensils needed: An enameled cup for each person, an excellent size is 4 diameterPaper plates or metal platesKnives, forks and spoons BBQ set A wok to cook in or 3 saucepans of various sizesA fry pan An Eski for ice and perishables Try and buy fresh meat as neededIt will keep in the eski with ice for at least one or 2 days if you can retain the iceWedge
Sleeping bag, pocket knife, lighter and your good to go.
Aluminum is very soft, and scratches easilyA kitchen fork or knife will leave a deep scratch in aluminum, bit hardly a mark on stainlessBTW, I have never seen aluminum on copper bottom pans.
