you would hang them on a clothes line and beat all the dust out
they were area rugs then they would drag them outside and beat them with a broom
They took them outside and beat them with a stick.
Theres been mechanical push sweepers used for a couple centuries, but most carpets rolled up and were shaken out then beat/patted with a special rug beater..I see them at antique stores.
Beat the sh*t out of them!
