You don't get to live rent-free. If it's that bad, move.
You must pay rent. You make written requests for repairs. Give your notice and move.
Are you for real? Did you take the tenancy without even looking at the property? Assuming your claims are true, most people seeing these faults would have looked elsewhere. Did you kind of not notice the steep stairway before taking the tenancy?
Addressing it one by one: 1) Hot Water - Is this required by an state? 2) Toilet - disgusting yes, but have you asked them to remove it with no response? 3) Stairway - will be argued that you knew this before renting 4) Smoke Detectors - Here is where you might have a case This may be required by law and I highly advise you to look into it. 5) See 1 - Also request to have it replaced - also check your lease to see what it says about this.
