Question:

how do i convert a dc motor to run 120v ac?

Hi, i got one of those baby swings that run on two D batts. They last about 1 week. There must be a coverter i can buy at radio shack, or something right? What would it be called? Thanks :)

Answer:

You'd be better off in purchasing rechargeable batteries. It would cost you more money to buy the necessary cables, connectors, and power supply to convert the 120VAC into the necessary DC voltage the swing needs.
To covert AC to DC you use a transformer ..... the same sort of thing that you use to charge your car battery. But honestly mate, do you really want to muck about with DIY electrics on something you're going to stick your baby in ? Surely just buying some rechargeable batteries is a much better idea.
A battery eliminator giving an output of 1 amp at 3v DC on full power should work. It has to have UL certification. May not be meant for outdoor use unless so specified. Linking this to the swing will mean wiring in an adapter. It is necessary to ensure that the connecting wire does not get entangled in the swing. Rechargeable batteries have a lesser output voltage. If the swing works with the lower voltage, you can get a pair with a charger.
If the swing requires 2 D batteries, that means is runs on 3 VDC (volts DC). You need an AC/DC transformer that has an output voltage of 3 V. You would then have to connect the output of the transformer to the leads which were connected to the batteries, keeping polarity in mind. The transformer is just one of those plugs with the big black cube attached to the prong housing.
