Question:

How do I dispose of my sofa?

I have an old sofa that's not in very good shape anymore and I need to get rid of it. Unfortunately, our city's bulk garbage day won't be for another two months. How do I get rid of this couch?

Answer:

Most cities have a large-item pickup that you can schedule; you may have to pay extra for it, but it's certainly better than having the sofa around taking up space!
Put it outside with a FREE sign on it. Someone will take it. If they don't, then smash it into smaller pieces throw it away.
Also, consider donating it to a charity (Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc) In some places, you can put it out on the curb with a free sign on it and it may very well disappear all by itself.
Call your local charity and see if they will pick it up. Even if its not in good shape, there might be somebody out there that could use a sofa. If your local charity can't help try calling youth groups in your area or local churches. Somebody probably needs the couch. Try running an add in a local paper offering the couch for free if somebody comes and picks it up.
It's not hard to pull your old sofa apart. If you turn it upside down and rip out the fabric underneath you will be able to see the bolts that hold the arms to the seat. Start with undoing the arms then get a hammer and start to pull the timber fame apart. You should be able to pull it apart enough to start to throw some of it away in your normal rubbish and the rest should be able to store it without being in the way still your city's bulk garbage day. I see that some people have said to give it to charity. They will not take your sofa if its not in good condition. I have tried to get rid of a sofa like that but because it had a small tear in it they wouldn't take it because know one will buy it.
