how do i do dread locks?

i do hair as a side job and i know how to do pretty much everything when it comes to hair but when a male friend of mine told me he wanted dread locks and he wanted me to do them i had to tell him no because i had not a clue where to start so if anyone can give me step by step directions or can give me any information on dread locks i would greatly appreciate it someone please help me..
