Question:

How do I fix my drain in my bathroom sink?

The sink in my bathroom is backing up. Does anybody have any trick to unclog it. I'm not sure about using drain'o. I heard that just makes it worse.

Answer:

Use a plunger and after the clog clears, fill the sink full of hot water and drain it. plung some more if you have to.
The teflon ring between the drain & the p-trap did not seat properly. This is a common problem. Buy a new teflon ring (gasket), install and tighten. Don't over tighten as this will distort the gasket. On the other hand, the silicon sealant works well also. It just doesn't look as nice.
I used drain o when my sink got clog and was not draining and had no problems with it and my sink works better then ever now. I used the gel type, not sure if it matters. Though I also know that I had a friend use drain o in his tub and he believes it created a solid in his drain, since it completely stopped draining after using it. A few days later his drain started working again on it's own and the clogged seemed to slowly disappear. His drain works perfect now, so I would try drain o again if I need to. Though I hope to never experience what he did.
Sometimes Drano will work. It depends on what's in the drain. It may require taking the drain apart. Under the sink is a U shaped pipe. That is probably where the plug is. With luck you have a drain plug at the bottom of this U. If so just remove that and fish around inside with a wire. If you don't have a drain plug there (most likely not) unscrew the first big nut around the pipe you come to at either end of the U. You will probably need a pair of channel locks or a pipe wrench for this. Wiggle the U shaped pipe around and take it loose. Pour water and whatever the plug is into a bucket and replace pipe. Put pan under drain before loosening bolts because you will have a water leak. Should drain sink as much as possible before you loosen the pipe. You may need to replace pipe washers and wrap threads with plumbers tape before reinstalling. Both washers and tape won't cost more than $5.00.
Please don't use Drano. It is a very strong chemical and for a sink clog there is really no need for it. Try the plunger, but if that doesn't work, try this- You will need- A bucket An adjustable wrench or pipe wrench teflon tape Under your sink should be a pipe that has a sharp curve like a U. get a bucket or something to put under it, and then unscrew the U shaped piece. WARNING-It's gonna be gross, and water will come out when you get this unscrewed. Clean the clog out of the U shaped piece of pipe, and then put it back on. Don't forget to clean the threads on the joints and put teflon tape on them prior to putting the piece back on. If you have long hair, make sure that you don't wash any of them down the drain, because this will clog your sink up super fast!
