Question:

how do i get rid of the awful smell in my bathroom sink?

so when i turn the water on this horrible smell comes from the bathroom sink. what can i use to get rid of it?

Answer:

You can unscrew the U-section of your trap off and clean it out pretty easily. With years of toothpaste, shaving cream, and spit in there, it's no wonder it smells. Take the trap out, use an old toothbrush to scrub it out once you pull out the hair and gunk, and it will be like new. Use baking soda on the toothbrush.
Sounds like build up in the trap directly below the sink. Remove the trap (U- shped piece right under the drain) and clean.
I would try vinegar and/or baking soda. You could also try boiling a pot of water and then pouring the hot water down the drain. You could also go to a home improvement store and buy a snake to try dislodging anything that could be stuck in there and causing the odor. I wouldn't pour bleach or any other chemical down the drain in case it is sewer gas. The bleach and the gases could combine to make you sick, or worse yet, go kaboom! Call your landlord or a plumber if general cleaning doesn't work.

Bleach is a good chemical to put down there like PJ says. If the smell is actually coming from the drain, then maybe your drain systems vent pipe is plugged. It will be a pipe that goes all the way up and out of your roof right above your sink. Have someone climb up there with a garden hose and see if the water goes through up there or if it over flows. If it overflows, then your vent is plugged and needs clearing out. The vent allows the trap in your sink to retain some water in it so that the sewer smell doesn't come back up out of the drain. If the vent is plugged, then the sewer gases will try to vent back out of your drain up into your room.
