Question:

how do i go about finding underground copper water pipes which run from the main water supply to my house.?

can copper pipes be picked up with a metal detector

Answer:

My local body shop just loves people who say that they don't need snow tires. He gives discounts to people that advertise the fact. Sometimes even pays their deductible and still managed to put two kids through medical school. We put snow tires all round on our 2006 Malibu Maxx this year. The difference over last winter (with all season tires) is phenomenal. I walked my car through 2 to 2 1/2 foot snowdrifts today. If I had been on all season tires I'd not have made it home.
call 811. its the universal number to have underground utilities located. call at least two days before any planned project. your water line could be as deep as 6 feet
Not if it is not snowing or you have icy roads but Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions. Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true. The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble.
A GOOD metal detector maybe.but there is no need for you to go out and buy one. Water lines up to the point of entry into your house are the responsibility of your water department. Simply give them a call and they will come out and mark them for you.
the pipes are going to be very deep, usually 3 feet. (depending on where you are, it needs to be below the frost line) a metal detector may not get that deep. the water department may be able to help, in my area (MA) the pipe from the shutoff to the house is the homeowners responsibility. If you can locate where it comes into your house, and locate where the shutoff valve is outside (usually under a metal cover in the sidewalk or in the ground) then the pipe should go pretty much straight from point A to point B.
