Question:

How do I hoist up the rear of my Honda Hornet?

I need to replace the rear shock and some other parts and so can't use the rear paddock stand. Does anyone know the proper way to hoist up the rear end? I was contemplating about putting a few straps throught the rear grab rail and lifting it that way?

Answer:

Harbor Freight and Sears have those bike hoists for cheap.
I'm not really sure about your bike but here's how I do it on mine (Honda Magna). I use a 2 1/2 ton floor jack and put it in the center of the swingarm pivot right behind the engine and just jack it up.
engine hoist works good, but gets in the way, If your jack has a removable top on it, and you are a handy kind of guy, weld a nub on a piece of steel and plop it down in there so it has more surface area and won't wobble when jacked up from the center of the bike then strap it down to the steel to be safe.
Use a paddock stand to hold the bike up stationary. Put a floor jack under the engine and lift the bike, to remove pressure off the shock.
whatever works
