I am trying to demo my shower to the studs. Tile is laid over durock cement wall. Floor tiles came right up but the tile on the durock is difficult to remove and I'm wondering how I'm going to remove the durock too. Thanks.
Get yourself a good hammer and start betting the sh-t out of it between the studs , dirty rotten job but well woth the efort-
Well the best way I've found to remove the tile and durock to the studs is a descent size crow bar and some old fashioned elbow grease.I demoed a few bathrooms with that concrete and wire mesh.If you can get it started on one end and get to one of the studs, try to find the staples and get under them and pry from there. If you've got hardy gloves you can grab a corner and pull. The weight of the tile and concrete can help get the staples out of the studs. Those are some of the quicker ways I've found to do it, but believe me you'll need a breather when it's done.5 gallon buckets are good for small debris to carry if you're on the second floor.Good luck, and don't kill yourself.
Getting a crow bar between the stud and cement board and start at it. You can just pull the nails right thru the durock. Whole sheets can come off. BEWARE... when they do they are very heavy and can be hard to handle. Start w/ the two end walls , since they are supposed to be put up after the back wall.. Just starting to smash the walls w/ a hammer can crack dry wall and seams or corners in adjacent rooms. Some care must be taken. Cover tub as much as possible since tiles will fall off with the flexing of the board as you remove it. GL
