Question:

How do I wire a new electrical outlet from an existing outlet?

Existing electrical outlet already has two white wires and two black wires on it (it's grounded too). Is it possible to run another electrial outlet off this one?

Answer:

By electrical code, you are allowed to wire up to 10 electrical boxes(whether it be light box or plug outlet box) per breaker. So it is a matter of turning off the breaker and count how many are connected to it.(The double plug in is classified as 1). Be sure you follow this otherwise it is a spot the insurance company will find after a fire. Could give them a loophole to jump out.
Yes it is. You just run a pigtail off the existing one to the new one.
check the ampage first. But I'm pretty sure you're just needing another electrical outlet. Be sure to switch the breaker off before pigtailing the new electrical wires.
Follow JBD's instructions, use 12/2 romex wire and since the screws are full, you will have to remove the wire from them, twist them together and add one more set of wires which will go to the empty screws. DO NOT PLUG THE WIRES INTO THE SMALL ROUND HOLES just to make a quick connect. 1- If the receptacle is three hole grounding type, it will have 2 flat slots and a round grounding hole green screw (inside). 2- One of the flat blades will be wider than the other. (this is the neutral wire - white wire). 3- The smaller one is the hot side and the black wire goes to this one. (you may see that the corresponding screws are colored - white for neutral and brass for hot/line. Good luck, be safe and turn off the power before you start ! ! !
It depends on how many amps you have running on the circuit already, and what you want to use the new outlets for. Be careful how you do this, make sure the wire you use is the right kind (if you have a 20 amp breaker, do not use 14 gauge wire), and make sure you keep the wire in it's sheath. I fixed one yesterday where the person ran a couple of unsheathed wires out of an open box - fire hazard! The way you do this is to turn off the breaker and remove the existing outlet. Most of the time the outlet has two screws on each side, for the black and white wires. If these are open, you can strip the wire, put a loop in in, and screw the wires onto the appropriate spaces. If not, you need to make a pigtail of the hot and nuetral wires. Be sure to connect the new ground wire as well to the existing ground in the box. Lowe's and Home Depot sell books on basic wiring that give you pictures and details. This is something to be very careful about, as you don't want to burn your house down or create a shocking hazard. If you are unfamiliar with the workings of electricity and are uncomfortable, get in touch with a professional. If you don't want to pay full price, there are a lot of electricians who do work on the side for a decent rate, but watch out for hacks.
