Question:

how do you cap off an underground electrical wire?

I have an outdoor electrical outlet in the middle of my backyard. I think the prvious owners used to have a hot tub back there. Anyhow, the pvc conduit coming from the outlet goes into the ground about 10 inches and then I can see the electrical wire buried underground coming towards my house. I would like to just remove the outlet all together without digging it all up because it goes under my porch concrete. Can I just cap it off somehow and bury it? How? Thanks.

Answer:

after a huge outage due to a snow storm in the late 1800s, New York City has required that all utilities run underground. underground utilities are still vulnerable to flooding, as we found out in Hurricane Sandy. since the 1950's almost all new telephone service is underground in the rest of the US except in possibly some very old communities. it is cheaper to run telephone underground because of the thinner wire that is used. underground telephone lines can still be damaged by lightning due to the strong ground electrical currents. the overhead lines you see along railroads are not telephone, they carry railroad signals. the demand for dependable electrical power is not too great, most people want the cheapest possible service and are unwilling to pay the premium cost.
should be a disconnect box within view of your outlet somewhere on the wall of the patio facing the outlet, TURN OFF THE MAIN POWER OF YOUR HOME OUT SIDE BY THE ELECTRIC METER and open that box, inside the box there will be wires going into the pipe that goes to the outlet in the backyard, disconnect those wires and cap the off with red wire nuts.If there is no disconnect box the power must be disconnected at the electrical sub panel by a certified electrician.
Outdoor Electrical Wire
Buy a PVC stopend for about a couple of pennies, You're done.
I recommend figuring out what breaker the wire is connected to in the breaker box and turning the line off. I would mark the breaker also, if it is not already so that nobody accidentally flips it back on. Then cap it with pvc etc.
