Question:

How do you check a pcv valve?

I have a 1994 Toyota 4x4 pickup with the 4 cylinder motor. How do I check to see if the pvc valve works?

Answer:

Personally, I just replace them about once a year. They're not that expensive.
When you pull the PVC valve, out from its rubber grommet on the valve cover.....shake it; it should rattle. If it does not rattle, drop it in a coffee cup of gas and wash it out....then it will rattle, and replace it back in the valve cover. Its only a 1/8th metal pin that sets in a hole....it allows air to be sucked out, but not back into the motor, commonly called a check valve. Its only a one way valve. Just wash out your old valve and it will be the same as a new one. There is no reason to buy a new one unless the plastic is cracked or damaged in some way.
take it out of the valve cover and shake it and if it rattles it's OK.
Check on the top of the valve cover...it's usually connected to the air intake or air manifold.
pull the pcv valve out and shake it, if it rattles, its good, also check to see if its working. start your truck and check for suction, by putting your thumb over the valve, if no suction, take the hose off and clean out the hose and fitting, its probably clogged up.
