Question:

how do you clean a small intricate copper item?

I have a copper train with a music box; the copper is quite dusty/dirty. What's the best method for cleaning this?

Answer:

Copper Music Boxes
Try compressed air, with low psi. Liquids could tarnish/ oxidize the copper and damage any parts inside music box.
i would used tarn X and a tooth brush
It depends on how shiny you want the copper. If you want bright, new copper color, it may be very difficult to do without damaging the music box because that would involve either dipping it into a patina-destroying solution, or rubbing it with a copper cleaning paste and water. If you'd just like to clean off the dust, then use a shorter bristled small paint brush, or a baby's toothbrush to get into the crevices. You can also spray the bristles of the brush with soapy ammonia, which will cut grease and dirt and also give it a bit of shine. Be sure to have a soft cloth to keep any liquid from seeping into the music box.
