Question:

How do you divide when the denominator is brackets?

Example:2y / (y-1)

Answer:

use the BODMAS rule, brackets open, divide, multiply, addition, subtract. tht is the procedure to be followed.! in this case as u said 2y/(y-1) subtract the denominator y by 1 and then the brackets wuld be open for u to follow up wid the division step on the numerator.!
You can't divide with the example you've given. In the example you used, 2y and (y-1) are two different things, and therefore can't be divided. It's kind of like trying to divide a number by a letter. Just can't be done because they're not the same thing, so unless you know what the variable is and can change the whole problem to just numbers, the answer is simply 2y/(y-1) The rule is that the denominator and numerator have to be the same format to divide, so when the denominator is in brackets then you'd have to do something to either put the numerator in brackets as well, or else remove the brackets from the denominator. This is usually done by factoring either the numerator or denominator in some way. If it can't be factored in a way that will work, it means that the problem can't be simplified anymore. I hope this makes sense.
