Question:

how do you paint on plastic?

i need to paint on some plastic plates for an art project. how do i do this?

Answer:

do not use oil based paint or water color. i would say acrilic should work the best. Maybe you can find special paint for plastics too. Check the nearest craft store.
Try spray paint from a can.
There are two spray paints on the market that are specially formulated for painting plastic. These paints do not even require priming the surface to be painted. One is Fusion and the other is made by 3M, I do believe. You can find either or both at your local home improvement center for under $5.00 per can.
Be sure there's no oil/grease residue on your plate, wash it with any dish washing solution and hot water. Wipe and dry. You can sand it but might give your plate unwanted scratches/textures. after drying, use a plastic primer so that the paint will stick to the plate. Dry the primer, then you can paint. I think they use acrylic paints for plastics...
