Question:

How do you thoroughly disinfect a leather sofa?

A friend has offered me a sofa - can't take it with her on a move. It is only a year old and very nice. BUT, she has 6 dogs. And all the problems that come with that. They have had mites, fleas, I am sure they have probably peed on the sofa, etc. I am wondering if there is anything you can use on a leather sofa - either store bought or made-at-home that I can use to clean and disinfect the leather. Thanks.

Answer:

Call a leather company or a store that sells leather furniture and explain your situation to them. They can give you probably good advise!
Firstly, I would thoroughly vacuum the sofa under the cushions, underneath, on all the fabric areas, checking for obvious stains, etc - if there are any, I would sponge clean those and let the sofa air out for a few hours. The vacuuming and airing should deal with any flea eggs, etc if you are thorough enough. If you notice any urine odor, there are products to treat that, in the pet aisle or specialist pet store. Next, I would get a dishrag, using soapy water and wring it out well, wipe over all leather parts and dry, to remove dirt, then use leather cleaner to condition and protect the sofa. I clean my leather sofas with leather cleaner that is from the automotive dept. It is liquid that you apply with a cloth and then buff off with a dry duster. The sofa should be as good as new and last for years.
Well, there are many ways to clean it, but I don't know if there is a good fix for this. You can clean it with a leather cleaner and then set a bomb inside/under it for the fleas/mites/ticks, but I don't know about any smells that might remain after that. It's a start though.
I would spray a flea/mite killer on the non-leather parts of the couch. Then I would use a leather cleaner on the leather, but you can also use Clorox wipes on the leather as long as you rinse it afterward. Just make sure that you spray the carpet where you will place the couch also with the flea/mite killer.
