Sorry Shirley, but pulleys have not been replaced by anything. It is the discretion of the user what type of hoist is going to be used. A chain hoist typically uses a toothed gear set is some kind of shackle assembly that has a shaft attached to the gear drum. As the gear assembly turns, it makes the shaft turn which is attached to some kind of load. About the only advantage to a chain hoist is the load that it can handle as opposed to a rope type pulley system. The opposite side of this is a wire rope and a pulley system that could handle the same load, just as well as a chain hoist. It really matters what a person chooses to use, and what cost they are willing to accept.
