Question:

How does a portable generator work?

I understand that it powers your stuff. But how does it get power? How long can it run before losing it's power? Please no physics, just a simple answer. Thanks!

Answer:

It has a generator that is run by a gas engine which makes electricity.
simple words But how does it get power? it makes its own, to share with you, it turns a fossil fuel into electricity How long can it run before losing it's power? until its fuel is gone (depending on the size of the fuel tank, rough measure is 8 hours on half load on its tank of fuel)
A generator has a gas or diesel engine that turns a motor that makes electric. It runs until it burns up all the fuel in the tank.
If you know how a motor turns then in its simplest terms, a generator is a backwards motor. Electricity powers the motor. In a generator an engine turns the motor producing electricity. Its about passing wires through magnetic fields and such.
A portable generator has a motor, gas, diesel, whatever fuel. This is used to turn either a DC generator or Ac alternator. If an alternator the electricity is converted to Dc by rectifiers. Then an inverter converts the DC to Ac at the correct frequency. It runs as long as there is fuel
