If you look at the periodic table it will show you how to determine the valence electrons in an element by the group it belongs to example: Group 17 on the periodic table has 7 valence electrons on its outer shellGroup 2 has 2 valence electrons, etc Exception: if you see an element with a II next to it -it means it will have 2 valence electronsExample: Cr II or Mg II or Fe II- means it has 2 valence electronsSame with III or IV or V, has 3 or 4 or 5 valence electrons with the element that would be associated with it Aluminum group 13- means there are 3 in its outer shell Phosphorus group 15-means there are 5 in its outer shell
