Question:

how many wheel barrows in a cubic yard of cement?

i have to get 2 yards of cement from a quot;shortloadquot; truck to the back patio area in 20 minutes is this possible. approx 80 feet away

Answer:

That depends on the size of the wheelbarrow. For example, my wheelbarrow holds four [4] cubic FEET. A cubic yard is 3 feet on a side, thus 3x3x3 which equals 27 cubic FEET in a cubic YARD. Therefore, for MY 4 cubic foot wheelbarrow it would require 7 loads [27 divided by 4] to move one cubic yard of cement.
have some one help get 2 barrows going, a cubic yard is 3 foot square, so 4 loads in 20 min ? going to be hard or rent a cement buggy self powered, will haul a yard at one time
9 (3 cubic ft) barrows or 14 (2 cubic ft) barrows
You will make approx. 12-14 trips provided you have a contractors type wheelbarrow that will hold 4+1/2 - 5 cubic feet of concrete. These wheelbarrows are rated a 6 cubic feet however that is measured with the wheelbarrows setting flat and filled to the rim, you can't haul concrete that way so figure as i stated per load. You need to allow about to figure about 4-5 minutes for a round trip per load. With 2 wheelbarrows running you should be able to unload and dump a load every 2-3 minutes. So you need lets say 14 trips at 2-3 minutes each that is 28 -42 minutes. Now add one more person on that 3rd wheelbarrow and you are now at a load every 1 to 1+1/2 minutes which equals 14-21 minutes for your 2 yards of concrete. So you will need 3 guys running the wheelbarrows and 2 guys spreading/screeding the concrete. There are a few things here to consider. #1. I assume the concrete company told you that you only have 20 minutes to get this concrete unloaded from their truck. I would call them back and ask if that is set in stone or could they give you a little more time. *It's not like they are being flooded with orders in this economy. #2. I seldom suggest this but this may be a close candidate for renting an electric mixer and doing this with just 2 buddies and mixing your own or buying bags and just mixing it with the mixer. Should take about 81 premixed bags. #3. Compare the total cost of the ready mix truck/ rounding up 3 wheelbarrows and some buddies to renting that mixer and just 2 buddies. You can have the concrete bags delivered and the mixer can be hooked to trailer hitch and pulled right to the patio. Can you round up that many buddies(4-5) and those 3 big size wheelbarrows?
Two cubic yards or concrete is 54 cubic feet. Wheelbarrows range between 3-6 cubic feet per load. That concrete is going to weigh roughly 8,000 lbs and the weigh limit on many barrows is around 375 lbs. If you divide the 54 cubic feet by 3 cubic foot loads, it'll take 18 trips. It your divide the 4 tons by 375 lb loads, it'll take 21 trips. In reality, you probably won't fill the barrow to capacity because it'll slosh over the top and be difficult to roll. So, expect it to take 30 trips of so. In twenty minutes, I'd estimate you will need 3 or even 4 wheel barrows to move that much concrete. And that would require that there is enough space that no one will get in each other's way. I wheelbarrowed 1 yard of concrete with one wheel barrow and two people in 30 minutes and regretted not planning better. You need someone spreading the concrete on the ground while helpers deliver wheelbarrowsfull. In your situation, I'd recommend having at least 4 people and three wheelbarrows.
