Question:

How to get my puppy to stop getting on the sofa?

Tips on this if you have any... Thanks so much!

Answer:

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond)
I use a squirt bottle. Also, reinforce with a firm NO and/or OFF. A lot of people prefer 'down', but some dogs get confuse cuz they think they should lay down. Use a word that is not already used as a command and stick with it. You can use plain water, if that doesn't do enough add some lemon. They don't like the bitter taste and it won't hurt em. When not at home put him in a crate. Good Luck!
You need a crate or at the very least a way to stop her from getting to the sofa when you are not there to watch her. The crate should be big enough for a Golden Retreiver to stand up in, sit and lie down in and to turn around in. I recommend the metal kind because they are more durable and cannot be chewed. You want getting on the furniture to be as unpleasant as possible. Until she is trained it is a good idea to wear a whistle or some from of high pitched noise. Blow it when she goes on the couch then shoo her off. When she jumps off stop blowing and praise her. Hope this helps
Every time you see her looking like she is about to jump up onto the sofa, sternly say (name), NO!, and block her so she can't get up onto the sofa. If she is already on the sofa, point to the ground where you want her to go and tell her Down, while gently nudging her to encourage her to get off the sofa. Encourage other family/household members to use the same disipline around your puppy. Your pup has to learn that she is not allowed on your furniture, period. A well trained dog will obey this rule even when guests are there etc. Remember to always reward your dog after she does what you want her to do! Never resort to beating her or hitting her as this will make her hand-shy. Good luck!
Well, most pups learn quickly. However, you have to be assertive. First of all, you should be crate training. Therefore if you cannot be in the room, the pup can't get into trouble. If your pup tries to get on the sofa while you're in the room, firmly say DOWN!!, and gently push him/her down. You may have to do this over and over, but consistancy is the key. Do not make any acceptions, or your effort is futile.
