Question:

how to get rotten smell out of bathroom sink?

When ever i wash my hands in our bathroom, the water smells like rotten eggs. I thought the pipes are rusted out or something (old house built 1970) What should i do to make this awful smell go away? Its not clogged or anything, just the water coming out smells horrible...Im trying to stay away from having to re-pipe our bathroom sink because were renting home...thank you!

Answer:

Pour some bleach down the drain and let sit for like, 30 minutes. That's what I do!
If you have this smell when you drain something, it sounds like you have a venting problem. Sometimes people will put a drain far enough away from a vent stack where it will not vent properly and as soon as you break the water lock (the trap under your sink) you will get gas coming up through the drain.
if it is coming out with the water you need a new filter usually in a pump house if it is well water if city the filter is usually on the side of the house or under! If the smell is when the water goes down the sink try pouring peroxide down the sink that worked for me!
I get the same problem every now and again. If the water only smells in your bathroom and not lets say your kitchen, then the smell is probably coming from your drain. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down your drain, then pour in boiling water and put plug in sink and let sit 1/2 hourish. This generally clears up any odor. You may have to do this once a month or so, but it's no big deal.
I agree with the other posters that if it is only the bathroom sink, it's possibly the drain. However, instead of pouring baking soda down the drain, I'd suggest cleaning out the sink trap. You can ask your landlord to do this, or do it yourself. The trap is the U-shaped bit of pipe under the sink drain. Put a bucket under there, take it off, and empty out the crud, soap, hair, etc. If your sink drains slowly this is probably the culprit also.
